Roark Roberts
A Short Bio by and about: Roark Roberts
I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly, more than just the movie. Traveled the world to every continent except Antarctica, for now. I have had many careers and countless jobs. Skied off 40 foot cliffs in Tahoe, dove from 80 foot cliffs in Acapulco, surfed the big waves of Hawaii, rode my horse across the Sierra Nevadas alone, white water kayaked above flood level rivers, sky dived, bungee jumped and you almost name it.
I grew up in a ghetto until I was almost 15. When the Gangs were prevalent in our hood of Compton, California, the kids on our street developed our own gang when we were 10. We wore our colors proudly. Being what my friends called a “white nigger, I got into a lot of shit. But the fighting, the beatings and trouble continued at home and outside. So when my father finally, once and for all, had beaten my mother, I had to drive her to the hospital.
After hiding away for many months my mother was able to transfer with her job to Santa Barbara, California. What a culture shock! I stayed there until I finished high school.
Then began my addiction to travel. I left the summer after graduation to spend a couple of months on a Carlos Castaneda expedition through Mexico. After that I moved to Hawaii, to live as a free spirited young soul. Surfing, Snorkeling, Sex, you know the picture.
Back to the mainland I came. Still having the travel bug, I had tried snow skiing and decided to ski for a couple of years. So, I threw 3 darts at a world map and one landed near Lake Tahoe. Well the best job for a ski bum is in the evening, so I started to work for casinos. After some years as a Slot Technician and Dealer I started a small business dealing to the dealers. Besides snow on the slopes of Tahoe it was prevalent on the tables in the casinos. This seemed like a great business model at the time. So dealing a little antidote became my fulltime career. After an intense close call with the law, I decided to go cold turkey and run away to join the foreign legion.
Luckily my career in the casinos provided me an in with the cruise lines. Starting in my mid twenties, I sailed the seas and saw the world. Along the way I met my wife who is from England and traveled with me. We came back to the States where I had many jobs in a short 3 year period to discover I had a knack for technology so I started a small computer company. After 10 good years I sold this business and now find myself wondering what’s next.
